Schizophrenia is a rare mental disorder that makes it difficult to:
Tell the difference between real and unreal experiences
Think Logically
Have normal emotional responses
Behave normally in social situations
Causes Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness and mental health experts are still not entirely sure what causes this disease. However they are sure that there is a genetic component to this. Certain events can trigger this in people who are at risk for schizophrenia. This disease is usually starts to take it's course in the mid-teen years. Childhood-onset schizophrenia can begin as early as age five but, it can go undiagnosed because it has many autism like symptoms. Symptoms Symptoms develop slowly and has a multitude of symptoms. Some people tend to get more severe symptoms and some get less. At the beginning of this disease the symptoms can be the following:
Irritable or tense feeling
Difficulty sleeping
Difficulty concentrating
As this illness progresses the following symptoms become more pronounced:
Lack of emotion
Delusions
Hallucinations
Problems paying attention
Thought "jump" between unrelated topics
Bizzarre behaviors
Social isolation
Disorganized schizophrenia symptoms may include:
Anxiousness
Anger
False beliefs that others are trying to harm you or your family
Catatonic schizophrenia symptoms may include
Lack of activity
Muscles and posture may be ridged
Grimaces or other odd facial expressions
Doesn't respond much to others
Public Perception
The way that people think of this disease is that the people that have it are in straight jackets in a padded cell. I believe this is do to media making anyone who has a mental disorder seem like they should be euthanized. Schizophrenia can be treated with medication and when regularly taking it you will be able to preform regular daily functions.
Treatments
Treatments for this disease are few and far between because so little is known about this disease but there are some medications like Clozapine. Clozapine changes the levels chemicalsin the brain to help ease the effects of Schizophrenia. Sources Surviving Schizophrenia by Dr E. Fuller Torrey
